2021 Murgo Brut Etna Spumante DOC
You may find it surprising that Mt. Etna has a long tradition of making wine in the French Champagne style. The powerful and entrepreneurial Spitaleri family of Mt. Etna took their bubbles on the road during the peak of World Fairs and trade shows in the mid 19th c. They won first prize multiple times, outdoing their French Champagne counterparts.
Murgo is perhaps the most well known producer of spumante on Etna. Though they are not part of the same bloodline, they picked up where Spitaleri left off. This time, however, they used the native Nerello Mascalese grape rather than the French Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They were the first to produce a sparkler from Nerello in this area and they have persisted since. 100% Nerello Mascalese. Tart, crisp, subtle brioche notes, clean.
