2017 Il Censo "Provvido" Nero d'Avola

The label on this wine may look familiar to you. Gaetano and Nicoletta Gargano, proprietors of Il Censo, consult with the infamous Paolo Bea in Umbria and in addition to labeling, they fully adopt Bea’s minimalist intervention winemaking approach. While there is some sulfur addition, many would label the wine as natural. 

Gaetano’s family has owned the estate for over 200 years, but they did not dedicate their efforts to winemaking until about 25 years ago when they met the Bea family. Il Censo means “the census”. The name predates the family’s ownership and most likely refers to feudal times and having to pay the landowner.

Medium bodied, med acid, black cherry, blackberry, licorice, dark chocolate, baking spice.
