Fabio Ferracane "Guancianera" Avulisi 2020
OUT OF STOCK- hope to have it back in the late Spring
While Nero d'Avola truly grows everywhere in Sicily, the grape typically has its best expressions in Vittoria, Ragusa, and Siracusa. So, we were surprised to find this 100% Nero d'Avola from the Western reaches in Marsala. We were even more impressed by just how dang good it is! Black tea, juicy marasca cherry, woodsy (but no wood aging), balanced, fine tannin. Get. At. It.
"Guancianera" is story of two Sicilian love birds. Fabio Ferracane inherited his vineyards from his father, who inherited them from his father before him. Fabio knew of his fascination with wine making at an early age, helping his father in the vineyards and the cellar. He later went on to study oenology and viticulture. It was during this studies and working in wineries abroad that he came to the full understanding that good wine starts in the vineyards.
He practices organic viticulture and is what we would consider at Cittavino & Co., a conscientious winemaker. Some consider it a natural wine with its minimal sulfur additions. According to Fabio, "The winemaker staying in his cellar – adjusting the wine, modifying it, assembling it, often tasting it and deciding whether or not to improve it" is just not him.
