2023 Gragnano Penisola Sorrentina DOC
The winery is located on the outer slopes of the Astroni crater between Naples and Pozzuoli. Once the private hunting grounds for the Bourbons, today it is a State Nature Reserve managed by WWF Italy.
Piedirosso, Sciascinoso, Aglianico, Olivella harvested in October for the (slightest!) touch of sweetness. This purple fizzy red is Napoli’s answer to Lambrusco and is a popular pairing with Pizza Napolitana. It’s also going to blow the socks off your guests at Thanksgiving. It’s dark friuted but still lighter than your typical red Lambo, and instead replaces the balsamic bitter finish with a flinty note quintessential of the Piedirosso grape. Pop open with the antipasti and cheeses, maybe drink it the whole day?
Gragnano is the name of the town which has become synonymous with the wine- a common occurrence in the wine world (see Champagne), but especially so in Italy! The grape doesn't exist without place.
