With wine making in his family blood, Vito Lauria decided to attend the University of Udine in Friuli where he obtained a degree in Enology in 2003. After stepping off the campus he worked at a number wineries in northern Italy for a few years before returning to Sicily in 2005. Vito came home to open the old family winery in Alcamo, 30 miles west of Palermo. The organic grapes for this wine, however, grow in the sandy and limestone soils of Ragusa in the denomination of Vittoria. The wine is made in a minimal intervention manner with in stainless steel with early harvested grapes to maintain bright acid and lower tannin for an easy drinking rendition. Cherry, aromatic herbs, caraway seed, dried rose petals, white pepper.

According to Vito, this wine is the “foreigner” among the Lauria wines: the only one that doesn’t grow around Alcamo, but close to the beaches of Scoglitti, in the area of Ragusa. It’s from these “lean” lands which it owes its attractively weak color and its lightness. Frappato is Sicily’s most ancient red grape- its origins are unknown, which means it likely is indigenous to the Island and more specifically, the southeastern zone of Vittoria. It was at one time cultivated only to eat, and then later known as the wine of the royals.

100% certified Organic Frappato grapes; Nia Nobile vineyard close to  Scoglitti beaches near Vittoria; sandy soils; early harvest to maintain freshness; fermented 12 days at 60º F; aged 8 months in stainless steel tanks.
