Grottafumata means “smoky caves,” named for the caves formed by a nearby river that has eaten through the lava and the smoke from naturally occurring sulfur in the lava that steams up from the caves. A producer on the southeast slopes of Etna, in Contrada Carpene, Monte Gorna e Monte Ilice (Trecastagni e Zafferana Etnea) at 730 mt above sea level, Mauro Cutuli frows 2.5 hectars in alberello. The vines are between 40 and 60 years: Nerello Mascalese; Nerello Cappuccio; Carricante; and Catarratto. The age of Volcanic soil is 600 years old.
