2021 Due Terre Nero d'Avola Siclia IGT
Due Terre Wines is a collaboration between friends of wines made from the
indigenous grapes of Italy – All the wines are produced as 100% pure
varietals, certified organic, with minimal intervention and wine making in order to allow the characteristics of the grape to shine through. Sicily has the largest number of
organic vineyards in Italy, but these grapes are often sold off as bulk wine to the north. Due Terre is reclaiming these grapes and bottling them as wines of origin, rather than allowing them to disappear into another anonymous bottle of bulk wine.
Due Terre's goal in making this Nero d’Avola was letting the delicious vinous quality of the grape shine through. The vineyard is located at the base of Monte Bonifato at 350m above sea level with clay soils that are very poor in nutrients creating the perfect conditions for bright, fresh red wine. Also has an earthy, forest floor tinge that is missing in many fruitier expressions of the grape.
The winemaking is quite simple: Grapes were harvested in mid-September,
cryomacerated for for 24 hours to preserve freshness, followed by fermentation at 62°
F/16° C for 10 days, and then simply aged for 8 months in concrete tanks
