2021 Due Terre Catarratto Terre Siciliane IGT
Due Terre Wines is a collaboration between friends of wines made from the indigenous grapes of Italy – All the wines are produced as 100% pure varietals, certified organic, with minimal intervention and wine making in order to allow the characteristics of the grape to shine through. Sicily has the largest number of organic vineyards in Italy, but these grapes are often sold off as bulk wine to the north. Due Terre is reclaiming these grapes and bottling them as wines of origin, rather than allowing them to disappear into another anonymous bottle of bulk wine.
Due Terre uses the less common biotype called Catarratto Bianco Lucido which is known for making higher quality, elegant wines that are more complex, full of juicy acidity and pleasant minerality. The north and east facing vineyards on Monte Bonifato are over 650m above sea level on pure calcareous rock with a very thin, poor topsoil. The winemaking is simple: Grapes were harvested in mid-September, gently pressed and cold fermented at 57° F/13° C for 15 days, and then simply aged for 4 months in concrete tanks.
