The 2023 Shake Ridge Ranch Barbera is a stellar example of the potential of this Italian varietal in California's diverse terroir. Shake Ridge Ranch is farmed by the infamous Anne Kramer. She is well known for meticulous organic farming principles matched with a high-quality growing site. Located in Sutter Creek of Amador County the site elevation is 1750', with soils composed of schist and loam. The vines have a southwest aspect with a 15% slope.

The grapes were hand-harvested at daybreak. 100% whole cluster fermentation with gentle daily pump-overs, native yeast, and native malolactic bacteria fermentations. This wine was racked off malolactic lees and aged for 10 months in neutral barrels. Unfined and unfiltered.

Lifted aromas of blueberries, ripe strawberries, with intense floral notes and hints of savory aromas of black pepper and chalky minerality. There's a pleasing textural richness that coats the palate, supported by velvety tannins that contribute to a supple and approachable mouthfeel. The vibrant acidity, typical of Barbera,  keeps the wine lively, and a touch of earthiness adds complexity, evoking the sense of the terroir. At 13% alcohol, Terah makes the kind of barbera I long for from Italy- rich barbera fruits, but lively acid to keep it lifted on the palate. Most barbera coming from Italy these days are a minimum of 14.5% alcohol. It’s not their fault! Global warming has certainly made finding the balance between grape ripeness and moderate acid an incredible challenge.

The California wine climate is shifting and while the days of big house cabs and zins are still here, they have moved aside to allow for more diversity in grape variety and winemaker. Terah’s philosophy comes from years of experience and experimentation. She focuses on lesser known CA growing areas as well as Mediterranean grape varieties. Cittavino is featuring her Italian wines which are a pure and expressive blend of CA climate, Mediterranean vibes, and Terah’s kind and discerning personality- the wines are just so precise and unique.

A native Californian with Palestinian roots, Terah refined her unique style and found her love of wine by way of food and from her travels across the globe. She started her professional career in the hospitality industry studying at the International Culinary Institute in California. She then spent time working in wine bars, a Michelin-starred restaurant, wine education, and consulting in the Bay Area.

Terah ambitiously immersed herself into the international world of wine, studying Enology and Viticulture in both Spain and France. She completed 13 harvests covering five countries. She was recently named one of Wine Enthusiasts 40 Tastemakers of 2024.
