2019 I Garagisti “Manca” Cannonau
Located in the geographical center of Sardinia, in the Mandrolisai appellation, three friends have teamed up to keep alive the wine-growing traditions of their ancestors, cultivating 80+ years old alberello vines of Cannonau, Monica and Bovale (aka “Muristeddu”) on poor, white/pink granite soils in 400-700m asl. Their wines vibrate with the primordial energy of this wild Island, but do so with incredible grace and agility.
This Cannonau comes from 680m asl from 30-40yr old vines Grapes are hand harvested in the first two weeks of October. Grapes are crushed by hand in an antique wooden press and then fermented in steel for about 2 weeks after which the wine is macerated on the skins for another 4 days. Matured in 225L French barriques for 1 year, and then at least 3 months in bottle.
Intensely complex and solidly structured with great balance. This has bright clean flavors of red fruit and a spice and herbal driven finish.
