The Cacc'e Mmite denomination is the epitome of farmer's wine made specially for a dose of extra calories while working the fields, named after the actual action of throwing the grapes in (cacciare) and pulling them out (mmite) of the millstones. In the past, grape growers would process their wine in the landlord's facility. They were charged by the time they spent there and had to act fast- throw 'em in, take 'em out! It is by definition a field blend of red and white grapes and is the only red wine DOC/ denomination wine in Italy that mandates that white grapes be part of the blend.
Located in the north in Foggia, the vineyards grow at 300m asl, on calcareous clay and sandy soils. The elevation and Balkan winds keep the climate fresh and wines from this area can retain a remarkable acidity.
The Longo family has been cultivating grapes and olives since the 1960s. The winery was founded in 2000 and their style has always been more restrained than often jammy Pugliese interpretations further South in the region. They employ Graziana Grassini as the winemaker, who herself had worked for the legendary Giacomo Tachis and contributed to the Tignanello fame. They are organic in the vineyards and seek sustainable practices beyond, such as solar electricity and grey water systems.
The wine has a deep color, but sits relatively light on the palate. Rustic tannin, ripe red berries, complemented by delicate floral notes and a hint of spice
